Wish it was Christmas Everyday?

Brian Adams has a cool Christmas Song where he says, “There’s something about Christmas time that makes you wish it was Christmas everyday…”

I like it.  It makes me pause and remember the magic.  It also makes me realize a few things that may be responsible for that feeling. I may be taking liberty here, but I’m going to assume that Brian and I shared similar experiences (as most of us in the Western Hemisphere have) of good times, decorating the tree and waking up with a presents under the tree.  There is something “about this” for sure!  And its called…marketing! Basically the lead up to the big magical day is an intensely choreographed advertising and sales campaign that is flogged over the 6 to 8 weeks prior to Christmas and planned months or years in advance.  I can guarantee that the people at the big toy companies are already planning next years product launches (coordinated of course with summer movie and book releases).

My wife and I spend a lot of time getting ready for the big day ourselves!  We do use it as an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends, get our kids some things they want or need and have a feast!  Again its weeks in the making for us, sometimes the pressure is almost too much!  So in essence we’re creating the smiles and twinkling eyes in Brian’s song, by creating a magical experience that takes weeks at least to pull off!  Unfortunately then, it would be impossible to have that kind of Christmas every day wouldn’t it!  If we want that feeling every day though, that is more within reach. The smiles and twinkling eyes of old men and children are there if we look.  But we have to look.  And we have the ability to create magic for people every day as well. But we have to slow down and share it.  It is in our own smiles, our kindness and in the moments that we give the best of who we are. This Christmas, let’s use this opportunity to realize that magic is part of the human experience and we can choose to create it ourselves, all year long, without the big extravaganza that we have been lead to believe only comes at Christmas.

  1. I like your post. I don’t know if I wish it were Christmas every day, but I do wish the season could be a little more drawn out so we could soak it all in more. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
